Manchester City head coach Josep Guardiola did not plan to sign 22-year-old River Plate striker Julian Alvarez to his team. The Spanish specialist approved this move only after the transfer of striker Ferran Torres to Barcelona.

The signing of Alvarez in January 2022 cost € 21.4 million, but he spent the rest of the season at River Plate. The sale of Torres to Barcelona brought € 55 million.

This season, Alvarez has scored seven goals and two assists in 20 matches for Manchester City. He went as part of the Argentina national team to the World Cup and has already scored four goals and given an assist in six meetings at the tournament. The Argentines have reached the final of the 2022 World Cup, where they will play with the winner of the France – Morocco pair.
